DENVER (CBS4)- Turbo Tax has stopped processing Colorado tax returns because of fraudulent filings.
The popular do-it-yourself tax preparation software is responding to an increase in filings that are using stolen personal information, including Colorado.
Intuit, the company behind Turbo Tax, said most victims found out that a fraudulent tax return was filed in their name after receiving a rejection notice after filing their returns.
The Colorado Department of Revenue is working with other states and the tax software industry. They are also monitoring income tax filing to ensure that the taxpayer receives the proper refund.
The Department of Revenue’s online e-file tax service, Revenue Online, and tax accounting systems have not been compromised.
There haven’t been issues with federal returns because the Internal Revenue Service has implemented stronger fraud protection.
Turbo Tax is working with security company Palantir to investigate the problem.
So far, Intuit said there was no security breach of its systems. Instead, it believes personal information was stolen elsewhere and used to file returns on TurboTax.
Colorado taxpayers may verify the current status of their state income tax return and refund by going to www.colorado.gov/revenueonline. Click on “Where’s My Refund?”
Turbo Tax gave no indication about when they may resume processing state income tax returns.
